Tekisha Dwan Everette, PhD

Dr. Tekisha Dwan Everette is an innovative thought leader and strategic powerhouse in nonprofit leadership. She is widely recognized for driving transformational change at the intersection of public policy, health equity, and social justice. Dr. Everette has had an impressive career spanning the nonprofit, state, and private sectors and she has consistently leveraged her expertise to influence policy, guide organizations, and deliver measurable, lasting impact.
As the inaugural Executive Director of Health Equity Solutions (HES), she transformed a start-up into a statewide force for health equity in Connecticut. Under her visionary leadership, she expanded the staff, diversified HES’ revenue streams, and grew its operating budget by an extraordinary 600% in under eight years—solidifying its reputation as an agent of change.
Throughout her career, Dr. Everette has provided strategic leadership on national and state policy, has built advocacy initiatives, built partnerships with the White House, federal agencies, Congress as well as state and local governmental entities and non-governmental organizations. She has championed the interests of nonprofit healthcare organizations on critical issues including health reform, Medicare, Medicaid, and federal appropriations. Every step in her career has reinforced her reputation as a trusted strategist and changemaker.
In addition to her executive leadership, Dr. Everette is an experienced board leader and trusted governance advisor. She has served on numerous nonprofit boards and commissions at the state level. Through this work, she has contributed strategic insight, policy expertise, financial acumen, and collaborative leadership to help organizations strengthen impact, expand reach, and navigate complex challenges.
Dr. Everette’s academic achievements reflect her unwavering commitment to social change. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from American University, specializing in race, gender, and social justice in social policy; a Master of Public Administration from Virginia Tech; and dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in Political Science and Interdisciplinary Studies from Virgina Tech. She earned her Master of Public Health from Yale University and holds a certification from the National Board of Public Health Examiners. Her leadership development includes graduating from the Masters Series for Distinguished Leaders and the National Urban Fellows America’s Leaders of Change program.
A highly sought-after public speaker and facilitator, Dr. Everette brings powerful insights and practical strategies to audiences across sectors, inspiring leaders and organizations alike. She is a lifetime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated and the Association of Black Sociologists. She is a member of several other professional and civic organizations.
Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. Everette is a passionate traveler, cultural enthusiast, and creative spirit. She believes that exploring the world broadens empathy and perspective. She is on a personal mission to visit every continent at least once. In 2024, she completed her quest to visit all 50 states. In her free time, she enjoys music, writing poetry, dancing, and cooking.
